This is a shot I took of my Granddad back in 2014. This is a shot I took of my Granddad back in 2014. I have found myself reflecting, as it was his birthday last week. After reaching his early 90's he sadly passed away a few years back. I had a big knot in my stomach at the prospect of taking this photo because Granddad had been a photographer in his working years, and to ask a man I had so much respect for to allow me this moment wasn't easy. My confidence was low and he was literally sitting in a living room armchair, but I felt a strong compulsion to honour him in the best way I could. He was so kind to oblige my courage with this moment and politely patient, whilst I sweatily fumbled with my camera settings. I have to admit, once I had taken around 10 shots and knew I got the photo, the sense of elation was something else. Much better than a feeling of life long regret. If you can build up enough strength to battle your personal fears you will find a personal evolution within, that will have you progressing further than you ever imagined. It’s these moments that are so precious, and you truly realise the value of photography. #ripgranddad

We’ve been putting this post off for so long. It We’ve been putting this post off for so long. It’s hard to know the right time to share our journey, it’s still so raw with no idea of where the future will take us. But so many keep asking how we are doing and what the situation is, so we feel we need to give a bit of an update.

Isaac Yahya was born on Thursday 19th November, weighing 7lb8. We chose these names as they both work in Arabic and English and also the names are linked to infertility stories in Islam and even Christianity.

Isaac was intubated within a minute of birth. I (Sonia) was in Birmingham Women’s Hospital, separate from Isaac and Simon for 2 nights, as Isaac moved over by a critical care ambulance to the Birmingham Children’s Hospital. I finally got to hold him once I was discharged on the Saturday.

I was terrified to meet my boy. It was the hardest thing manoeuvring the tubes and wires but the nurse said it would do both of us some good. From then, he finally felt like he was mine! Prior to that, just seeing pictures and being on FaceTime with Simon, he didn’t feel like he was my son - it didn’t feel real.

On the Sunday (22nd November) Isaac had his surgery to repair the diaphragmatic hernia. Seeing him go off to theatre, that was the first time we both actually got to kiss our son and I’m so thankful the anaesthetist insisted we kiss him properly - without the mask. After the longest 5 hours we were told we could see him.

It was then time to wean Isaac off the paralysing medication and sedatives, then the intubation, followed by different types of ventilation over the following weeks. Just as we started getting to know Isaac, with his eyes opening and him recognising us, they had to put him on a ventilator that made his face so swollen he couldn’t open his eyes - this was one of the hardest things. So many times we would want to hold him and his ventilator would come off and it was so traumatic in so many ways.

We had countless additional hurdles during his hospital stay - for e.g. Isaac was given an overdose of Gentamicin, which could have been detrimental to his kidneys and hearing. Thank God, so far he’s managed to fight through it all!

Finally parents after 9 long years! We decided to Finally parents after 9 long years! We decided to do a shoot for ourselves, these were taken in our living room. Our little one turns 12 weeks old tomorrow and we still can’t believe he’s here. He feels too precious to share with the world with all he’s been through, so this will have to do for the time being. He is such a miracle to have got through all the challenges he has faced. We are very proud ❤️

Photo by Simon when I was 33 weeks pregnant - just Photo by Simon when I was 33 weeks pregnant - just before we found out our little ones diagnosis 🤰🏻

Happy Birthday to Me // Wow, what a year. This year has been the most challenging of my life. From last year, a 30-31 year old with all the travel plans I could imagine and a thriving business. To now, 32 years of age - a mother, after almost 9 years of wanting a child and pretty much having written the thought of having a child out of my future. Plus having a business on hold, thanks to a worldwide pandemic.

This past year has taught me so much. The most important things in life: loved ones and health. Both taken away from us in the most crucial of times, with having our little one in intensive care and living in hospital for a month - without being able to see loved ones or even being able to be alongside each other whilst seeing our baby in that time. All thanks to covid.

I can only hope this next year brings us real quality time with our loved ones, who we miss so dearly. We have loads of celebrations to catch up on and I just hope we don’t miss out on more this coming year. I am struggling with this birthday, as our little one reaches 12 weeks and only having been held by my mum - no one else other than hospital staff. We can’t wait to share him with everyone.

The reality of the struggles also brought a bit of PTSD and I am not feeling like myself, but that’s okay. I most certainly earned my tiger stripes this year and I cannot respect other mothers enough for the incredible journey that their bodies go through. But becoming a mother during a pandemic, with a little one in intensive care and no one being able to even visit us or our baby. We couldn’t have felt anymore isolated. No one to just hold him for 10 minutes to give us a break - didn’t they always say it takes a village to raise a child? We don’t have that, no sense of community, no mother and baby groups etc etc.

Micro Wedding // In a time when full weddings are Micro Wedding // In a time when full weddings are unable to go ahead, it was beautiful to be a part of such an intimate ceremony. We were really touched by George’s commitment to his bride, Sabira, by infusing some Irish charm to the traditional Turkmenistan attire👌
